David Walsh, M.A., LMHC, NCC

david I view my counseling philosophy and approach as holistic, incorporating many techniques, depending on the needs of the client. I prefer to advocate for you in the present by addressing the past. The hope is to change the future. I also understand that sometimes we need to change without thinking about the past or the future and to that end I am ready to work with you to make needed cognitive and or behavior changes without any time reference.

I strongly believe that everyone’s spirituality, race, culture, gender, and sexual orientation must be respected, as these are key elements that make us who we are, and as a therapist I feel that I must avoid imposing my cultural views when counseling.

Often, discrepancies between what you think and feel inside and how you interact with people outside can be a source of distress as well as the impetus for change. As a therapist, I would use my clinical knowledge, life experiences, and unconditional positive regard to assist you to make wanted change. I believe in egalitarian relationships and feel that more can be accomplished when working together as equals rather than as a couple with a power differential. Consider yourself as the expert on you; my job is to help you uncover the answers that you very well may already have. I prefer to be myself during sessions and believe that empathy plays a role in building the therapeutic relationship.
